CWU Student Poster Show Brought Art, Conservation, and Community Together at Nuwave Gallery
This spring, Nuwave Gallery in downtown Ellensburg partnered with Central Washington University (CWU) to host one of the most exciting student art shows in Ellensburg to date. Titled "Paper Trails," the poster exhibit featured original work by CWU design students, inspired by local themes of conservation and community in Kittitas County.
Led by local artist, designer, and curator Erin Oostra, this collaboration was more than just a gallery exhibit—it was a reflection of her ongoing mission to give back to the community, elevate emerging artists, and make the arts accessible to everyone.
A Powerful Collaboration Between CWU and Local Artist Erin Oostra
The idea for the collaboration was sparked by Erin Oostra and CWU professor Matthew Wenz, who saw an opportunity to connect students with a real-world gallery experience. Erin, who has a professional background in graphic design and marketing, deeply understood the value of such opportunities.
“When I was in school, I would’ve done anything for a chance to show my work in a real gallery,” said Erin. “Whether it’s a perfect experience or a learning one, getting that exposure is huge for students.”
Wenz incorporated the project into his upper-level poster design class, and together they curated the exhibit to reflect regional themes, specifically local conservation efforts and Ellensburg’s surrounding landscape—perfectly aligned with Nuwave Gallery’s focus on Pacific Northwest art and nature-inspired design.
An Inclusive and Engaging Art Space in Downtown Ellensburg
As a community-focused gallery, Nuwave was proud to provide a platform for young creatives. Erin Oostra has long emphasized creating a welcoming “third space” in downtown Ellensburg—not home, not work or school, but a warm and creative gathering space where all are welcome.
Whether visitors were sipping wine from Fortuity Cellars or lemonade during the reception, the gallery buzzed with energy throughout the month of the exhibit. The First Friday Art Walk served as the closing celebration, where students, locals, and art lovers gathered to vote for their favorite poster, enjoy music, and meet the artists.
Real-World Art Experience: CWU Students Thrived in a Professional Gallery Setting
The show allowed students to:
Showcase and sell their work professionally
Learn how to prepare art for a gallery setting (thanks to framing and material support donated by Erin and Nuwave)
Participate in a community-led People’s Choice Award ($1 per vote), with all donations going directly to the winning student
Contribute to KEEN (Kittitas Environmental Education Network) through the sale of 8.5"x11" mini prints of their work
Erin's guidance helped ensure students experienced every element of what it's like to be a working artist. From creative development to sales, community engagement, and philanthropy, they were treated as professionals every step of the way.
Giving Back: Erin Oostra’s Ongoing Commitment to Community and the Arts
This show is just one example of how Erin Oostra continues to enrich Ellensburg’s art scene. Through her work at Nuwave Gallery and alongside Fortuity Cellars, Erin has:
Launched a Quarterly Give Back Program supporting local non-profits
Established a Community Wall inside the gallery, offering artists and students a chance to exhibit their work with all sales going back into the community
Provided free venue space for local organizations and creatives
Volunteered with the Ellensburg Arts Commission, Downtown Association, and Chamber of Commerce
Her leadership and heart for service have helped shape Nuwave Gallery into more than just a gallery—it’s a creative hub in downtown Ellensburg that brings people together through shared experiences and meaningful storytelling.
The Future of Art in Ellensburg Starts with Collaboration
The CWU partnership served as a reminder that the future of art is collaborative, inclusive, and deeply rooted in place. By working with emerging artists, Erin Oostra and Nuwave Gallery ensured fresh voices are not only heard, but celebrated.
“We’re shaping the kind of creative culture we want to see here,” Erin said. “One that’s full of opportunities, support, and connection.”
